ICC Exceptional Service Award

The ICC Exceptional Service Award was established at ICC21 in 2020 to recognize and reward someone who has shown exemplary long-term service to the cryocooler community in general, and the International Cryocooler Conference in particular.

Nominations should include:

  • Nominee's name
  • Nominee's institution
  • A brief statement (500 words or less) detailing why the nominee is deserving of the Award 
  • Nominee's Curriculum Vitae 

The Award Committee will review nominations and make a selection, while the ICC Board will vote to finalize the recipient.

This year’s awardee will be announced at ICC24 in Syracuse, New York, and will receive a plaque and monetary honorarium sponsored by Sumitomo (SHI) Cryogenics of America, Inc.

Nominations should be sent to Arifin Budihardjo at icc24chair@cryocooler.org by the May 15, 2026, deadline.

Past Award Recipients


2020:  Dr. Ray Radebaugh, Retired, NIST - Dr. Radebaugh has been a leading researcher of cryogenics since the first ICC conference in 1980 and has been the Conference's Treasurer and Registered Agent since the establishment of the ICC as a non-profit Corporation in 1996. He Chaired the 3rd ICC in 1984, has served on ICC Committees and the Advisory Board for many years and has published numerous papers in past ICC conferences. A key recent activity has been teaching an annual Cryocooler Short Course for new entrants to the cryocooler community since 1997.

2020:  Dr. Ronald Ross, Retired, Jet Propulsion Laboratory - Dr. Ross has been a leading researcher of cryogenics since his first ICC conference in 1988 and has been the Conference's Proceedings Editor since he initiated the formal publication of the ICC proceedings as a publicly available Cryocoolers X book for ICC 8, which he Chaired in 1994. He has published numerous papers in past ICC conferences and has served as an ICC Committee and Board member for many years. As a key recent activity, he took over as WebMaster for ICC21 and played a central role in organizing the successful ICC21 Virtual Conference.

2022:  Jeff Raab, Retired, Northrop Grumman - Jeff Raab has been a leading researcher of cryocoolers since helping found TRW's cryogenics activities in 1987. Following his first ICC conference in 1992, he has published 25 papers covering the multiple TRW/NGSS cryocoolers being used throughout the cryogenic community. In direct support of the ICC, he has served on several ICC Program Committees, has been a member of the Conference Board for many years, and in 2012 co-chaired the 17th ICC Conference hosted by Northrop Grumman in Los Angeles. Key recent activities include serving as a co-editor of the the ICC proceedings since ICC20 and chairing of the ICC Student Paper Award Committee since ICC21.
